BCF 10-10-10 Weatherization Action

 Hello and Happy Autumn!

It was a brisk and cheery day on Sunday, as more than 25 volunteers gathered for our last official BCF Weatherization Action. The attached photo depicts a break in the fun at 10:10 am, on 10-10-10.

Volunteers came to finish the siding and trim from the re-roofing project (including painting), install a tiny retaining wall around the crawl space entrance, and lay down the vapor barrier underneath in the back. We re-built the broken down-spout from the roof drain, installed a vent in the north gable end, and filled in near the foundation with concrete. We removed all the window air conditioners, installed window locks that were missing and tightened up yet another rattling window on the third floor. And, at long last, we replaced the missing slats on the bench ~ it is now safe to sit. Garden volunteers moved the compost piles and removed the spikey shrub along the back fence. They thinned the crops out front in preparation for moving these boxes to the back. They re-planted all the strawberries and prepped that bed for winter. They took soil samples to test for nutrients to maximize output next year.

So many tasks were accomplished, it was a blur of activity. With volunteers from BCF, Green Guild, Village Green Renewal, Bountiful Brookline, CCAB, 350.org, the EPA and even the Brookline Chamber of Commerce. It was a focused and determined crowd.

The TAB photographer was there for over an hour, up on the roof, down below, all over. He took the group photo attached.

We shared a wonderful lunch together, with a pizza donation from Molly Lonzarotta and help (and sweets) from John Gallagher, and also a huge tray of wraps from Zaftigs. Thanks you, Tommy for the cookies and Margo for the cheesecake.

Enormous heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped, schlepped, slogged and toiled for the Brookline COMMUNITY Foundation over the past 13 months. Your efforts will be felt for decades.

Please set aside the evening of November 4th to help BCF celebrate our 2010 Unsung Hero Awards, 5:30 - 7 pm, at BATV Studios, United Arts Building, Top Floor at Brookline High School.

Fondly,
