 The Brookline Department of Public Health celebrates National Public Health Week this year by joining with Brookline 2010, the town’s major climate change initiative, to promote the goal that Brookline residents “do at least one thing in 2010 to reduce your CO2 emissions.”   National Public Health Week 2010 activities in Brookline include:

Friday, April 2, 2010 

Free Kids Recreation Day 2010.  Offered by the Recreation Department,
Brookline children in grades K-8 can register for free activities such as golf and tennis lessons, multi-sports drills and clinics (soccer,
baseball, etc.), swimming, and the Special Olympics.  Tappan Gym and

Meatless Mondays in K-8 Schools. As part of the Brookline 2010 campaign which encourages Brookline households to reduce their carbon footprint, Meatless Mondays will be introduced at all K-8 public schools this month. Brookline’s Food Services joins the nationwide campaign, Meatless Mondays,designed to improve nutrition while focusing attention on climate change.

Water Tasting Test.  Brookline High School Environmental Action Club kicks off a campaign to reduce the use of plastic water bottles at BHS.  The campaign includes a "Take the water tasting test" where students are challenged to identify bottled water from BHS water fountain water.  The Public Awareness campaign will also include an article in the student newspaper, the Sagamore, and poster displays in the atrium and outside the cafeteria.  To encourage the use of metal water bottles, BHS Goes Green water bottles are for sale in the school store.

Mommymuscle Blast.  Monday, 7:30 pm, Free Demonstration which combines

Minutes in Motion for Seniors –Six week public health/fitness initiative for Brookline seniors.   The kick-off will be held on Tuesday, April 6,10:00 am, at the Brookline Senior Center, 93 Winchester Street. The program encourages seniors to join together in teams to increase their level of physical activity and have fun at the same time.  Kickoff features: Ted Aransky, Corporate Director of Fitness, Hebrew Senior Life will speak and Mary Stephenson, NIA Instructor, will offer sample exercises.  Call 617-730-2769 for details and to register.

Food, Inc. – A documentary.  Tuesday, April 6, 7:00 pm. This Academy
Award-nominated documentary will be shown FREE at Hunneman Hall, Brookline Main Library, 361 Washington Street.  Food, Inc. focuses its lens on the food industry and the role it plays in what we eat, how it’s produced, as well as the part the food industry plays in widespread obesity and an epidemic level of diabetes.  Please join us to for this FREE showing. 7:00 pm. Think EARTHursday.  Members of Brookline High Green Team plan a series of low consumption days throughout the spring, continuing on the first
Thursday of each month.  Students and staff will be asked to take a pledge to lighten their carbon footprint.
