Helping Nonprofits Helping People in Haiti

Our hearts go out to the people in Haiti who are suffering hunger, homelessness, injuries and personal grief from the recent earthquake there. The best way to help people in Haiti at this point in time is to make monetary donations to organizations who are experienced in disaster relief and have a presence in the country. Philanthropy differs from charity. Traditionally, philanthropy reflects long-term strategic investments to create lasting change. Charity is more short term and immediate. During times of natural disaster, both philanthropy and charity respond together to ensure good outcomes for people and communities.

Among the many excellent agencies providing disaster relief or connected to providers are these nonprofit organizations:

American Red Cross

American Jewish World Service
Beyond Borders
Christian Reformed World Ministries
Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids
Doctors Without Borders
Faith International
Oxfam
The Salvation Army
UNICEF
Yele Haiti

Helping Haiti

Sara - is there a sizeable Haitian community in Brookline? I have a Haitian friend who would serve as a conduit for donations who lives in Brookline and is highly regarded in Haiti as a former magistrate.

I would be happy to get him in touch with any group who can help immediately.
