Date:
07/25/2010 - 12:00pm
On Sunday, July 25, 2010, John Fitzgerald Kennedy National Historic Site will host a tea— in the tradition of teas given by the Kennedy family during John F. Kennedy’s 1952 senatorial campaign. The tea will celebrate the 120th anniversary of the birth of Mrs. Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. The Kennedy Campaign teas, of which Mrs. Kennedy was the central figure, proved to be an effective means of engaging women— a relatively new political audience— and introducing them to John F. Kennedy. On the day of the tea, the site will be open from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, National Park Service Rangers will offer special programs exploring Mrs. Kennedy’s involvement in politics from 12:00 to 4:00 pm, and Karine Bagdasarian will play Mrs. Rose Kennedy’s piano from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. As part of the celebration, admission to the site will be free on Sunday, July 25, 2010.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy NHS preserves the birthplace (1917) and boyhood home of the 35th President of the United States. The modest house was the first home shared by the president’s father and mother, Joseph and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy: John, the second of their nine children, spent his formative years in Brookline as his family began its rise to national prominence. In 1967 Rose Kennedy returned to 83 Beals Street to commemorate President Kennedy’s life, restoring the birthplace to her recollection of its 1917 appearance.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy NHS is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through October 31, 2010. Admission to the site is ordinarily $3.00 for visitors of age 17 or older. Guided tours of the house are offered every half-hour starting at 10 a.m. The last ranger-led tour is at 3 p.m. From 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. visitors may follow a self-guided tour.
