Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site (NHS), the Brookline, Massachusetts location of the first full-scale professional landscape architecture office founded by Frederick Law Olmsted, has received funding to prepare a new General Management Plan. This plan, which will supersede the site’s original 1983 General Management Plan, will establish goals and priorities for roughly the next twenty years. The National Park Service, which administers Olmsted NHS, seeks public input in the development of this plan. It invites community members from Brookline and Greater Boston, as well as area park users, landscape architects, educators, and others to two September events to launch the planning effort. The first will be an open house at the site, followed ten days later by a public meeting and community dialogue.
On Sunday afternoon, September 13 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, the public is invited to an open house at Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site located at 99 Warren Street, Brookline to experience this national treasure firsthand and learn about Olmsted’s home and office, the restored historic landscape that he and his stepson John created, the surrounding historic neighborhood, the important Olmsted Archives housed at the site, and educational programming initiatives soon to be launched. It is a rare opportunity to come inside the Olmsted house and historic design offices which have been closed for a major preservation construction project. Olmsted NHS is a fifteen-minute walk from the MBTA’s Green Line “D” branch Brookline Hills stop. Limited parking is available on Dudley Street, so use of public transportation is encouraged.
Those planning to attend the Hidden Brookline ceremony nearby from 2:00 to 3:00 pm on September 13 are welcome to stop by Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site either before or after.
