Envisioning the Future at Frederick Law Olmsted NHS: A Community Dialogue

Date:
09/23/2009 - 6:30pm

Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site (NHS), the Brookline, Massachusetts location of the first full-scale professional landscape architecture office founded by Frederick Law Olmsted, has received funding to prepare a new General Management Plan. This plan, which will supersede the site’s original 1983 General Management Plan, will establish goals and priorities for roughly the next twenty years. The National Park Service, which administers Olmsted NHS, seeks public input in the development of this plan. It invites community members from Brookline and Greater Boston, as well as area park users, landscape architects, educators, and others to two September events to launch the planning effort. The first will be an open house at the site, followed ten days later by a public meeting and community dialogue.

On Wednesday evening, September 23 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, the public is invited to attend a gathering entitled “Envisioning the Future: A Community Dialogue” to help plan for the future of Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site. At this event, the National Park Service will briefly explain the planning process, introduce some of the issues it seeks to address, and invite the public to discuss these issues and suggest others for consideration. Prior to the meeting, from 6:30 to 7:00 pm, attendees will be able to chat informally with National Park Service staff, view contemporary and historic photos of the site, and get information about recent site studies and upcoming programs. The venue for this event is the Lincoln Elementary School cafeteria, located at 19 Kennard Road in Brookline. This Brookline public school is located near Olmsted NHS and is roughly a ten-minute walk from the MBTA Green Line “D” branch Brookline Hills stop. Off-street parking is available at the school, accessed via Hedge Road, off Route 9/Boylston Street. Limited on-street parking is available on Kennard and other nearby streets.

The general management planning process at Frederick Law Olmsted NHS will explore a number of issues, including:

In light of the country’s rapidly changing demographics, how can the site and the Olmsteds’ work in general remain relevant and interesting to ethnically diverse urban audiences?

Olmsted NHS receives inquiries from educators serving young students to senior citizens. How can it best serve different learners?

Some have suggested the establishment of an off-site visitor contact station along the Emerald Necklace, with shuttle service to Olmsted NHS. What are the pros and cons of this concept?

During its first thirty years, Olmsted NHS has focused on conserving the original, hard copy Olmsted archives. How important is it to make them available on-line or via electronic formats?

Those interested in offering comments but are unable to attend either September program are welcome to send them to the National Park Service via the World Wide Web (www.nps.gov/frla) or mail them to Superintendent, Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site, 99 Warren Street, Brookline, MA 02445.
