World Premiere of "When the White Snake Cries", Nov 21-22

The Friends of Madame White Snake announce the premiere of  “WHEN THE WHITE SNAKE CRIES,”an original musical for children based on a 1,000 year old Chinese legend.

Brookline's ArtBarn Community Theater will perform “When the White Snake Cries,” an original musical for children by Cerise Lim Jacobs. The musical is based on the 1,000 year old Chinese Legend of the White Snake, a myth beloved in China but yet unknown in the West. Cerise, the Creator and Librettist of Opera Boston’s Madame White Snake, wrote the children’s show as part of the educational outreach by the Friends of Madame White Snake to celebrate the opera’s world premiere in February, 2010.

“I wrote this play to convey this myth from my childhood to our next generation of young people,” says Cerise. “I hope that all the kids who come to the show will take away something of Asian culture and that Asian kids will be proud of their heritage.”

The show recounts the story of a white snake demon who yearns to become human to experience love. It is told through Little Green (who is half girl, half snake) and a cast of 30 children from ages 11-14. Through drama, music and dance, the issues of truth, rebirth and death and what it means to be human are explored with humor and poignancy.

ArtBarn’s Executive Director, Jackie Borck says, “This show brings together elements of Chinese opera and western theater in a dramatic – and fun - way. It’s an ancient story with contemporary themes of racism, peer pressure, tolerance and love.”

“A multicultural project like this is another small step towards understanding Asian culture which is part of the American whole,” says Hsiu-Lan Chang, Chair of the Friends of Madame White Snake.
