Madame White Snake in Brookline
Having heard Cerise Jacobs, librettist of this new opera, present a riveting narration of the Madame White Snake tale at a presentation last fall at the Brookline Public Library, I can hardly wait to get our next "sneak preview" of the opera on November 12, again at the Main Library in Brookline. We'll be hearing some of the actual music, sung by artists of Opera Boston, in anticipation of the World Premiere in February! A truly special opportunity for all of us!
Madame White Snake
Madame White Snake is a powerful legend that has lived for over 1,000 years in China and East Asia. It is being introduced for the first time to a western audience through Opera Boston's world premiere opera, Madame White Snake, and ArtBarn's children's play, "When the White Snake Cries". We hope you will come to the Library event and to the ArtBarn play. These are wonderful opportunities to participate in cross cultural interactions and to support the social and cultural life in our community. Cerise Lim Jacobs, Creator and Librettist
Madame White Snake
I was fortunate to attend a dinner hosted by Cerise Jacobs at her house, where there was a preview of this opera. I was very moved by the opera, and just as moved by Cerise's passionate and eloquent telling of the story of Madame White Snake. The universal themes of transcendent love and loss translate across centuries and cultural variations and make the world feel smaller in the best sense. If you are curious about our world, if you are feeling hopeful, if you are feeling hopeless - this is an opera you must see.
When The White Snake Cries
Artbarn Community Theater's Rafters Company, a troupe of thirty 7th & 8th graders, has been hard at work over the last month bringing Cerise Jacob's beautiful play to life. We had a wonderful Q & A session with the playwright last week where she and the actors discussed the traditional Chinese cultural references in the play, and the differences and similarities between traditional Chinese and western views of love, spiritualism, life, death and the power of storytelling.
We echo Cerise's sentiment that this play offers an opportunity for actors and audience members to participate in cross cultural interactions and to experience the fusion of two beautiful cultures through art.
We hope you will join us on November 21st & 22nd for When The White Snake Cries More information about tickets can be found at www.artbarn.org.
